Bharat: Strengthening maritime defense capabilities, India and France today signed an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) for the acquisition of 26 Rafale-Marine fighter jets for the Indian Navy. The agreement covers 22 single-seater and four twin-seater aircraft, along with a complete package of training, simulators, associated equipment, weapons, and performance-based logistics support.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh and French Minister of Armed Forces Mr. Sebastien Lecornu formalized the deal at a signing ceremony at Nausena Bhawan, New Delhi. Senior officials, including Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, were present as signed copies of the agreement and related supply protocols were exchanged.

Beyond the aircraft procurement, the agreement emphasizes self-reliance under the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It mandates the transfer of technology for the integration of indigenous weapons systems.

Additionally, a production facility for Rafale fuselage and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hubs for engines, sensors, and weapon systems will be established in India. This move is expected to create thousands of jobs and open new business avenues for Indian MSMEs.

Manufactured by Dassault Aviation, the Rafale-Marine is a proven, carrier-capable combat aircraft designed for maritime operations. Deliveries are scheduled to be completed by 2030. Indian Navy and Air Force crews will receive extensive training both in France and India to ensure a smooth transition.

The Rafale-Marine shares a high degree of commonality with the Rafales already operated by the Indian Air Force. This will streamline training, maintenance, and logistics, enhancing joint operational readiness. The induction of these aircraft will significantly boost the Indian Navy's carrier strike capabilities, adding a formidable force multiplier to India's maritime strength.

With this acquisition, India deepens its defense ties with France and takes a strong step toward expanding its self-reliant defense manufacturing ecosystem.(PR)
