The much-anticipated Second Tawang International Marathon is set to take place on October 24, 2024, in the picturesque town of Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, also known as the "Land of the Rising Sun." This annual event, coinciding with United Nations Day, is being jointly organized by the Indian Army and the Arunachal Pradesh Government, reflecting the strong civil-military collaboration in this scenic region.
Following the remarkable success of its inaugural edition in 2023, Arunachal Pradesh's Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced on July 4, 2024, that the Tawang Marathon will be recognized as an international annual event. This declaration comes with a generous Grant-in-Aid of ₹2 crores, aimed at supporting over 5,000 participants across various categories, including the Full & Half Marathon and 10 & 5 km runs. The event boasts a total prize pool exceeding 60 lakhs.
The marathon's official website, www.tawangmarathon.com, was launched on July 10, 2024, and has already seen over 4,500 registrations from enthusiastic runners. Extensive promotional campaigns, including eight promo runs and two stalls in major cities, have significantly raised awareness about the marathon, enhancing the appeal of mountain sports and year-round tourism in the region.
Preparations for this much-awaited event began in early September, generating excitement and anticipation across the Northeast. As the date approaches, the Indian Army, Tawang administration, and local communities are eagerly preparing to welcome participants to this "dawn-lit" town.
The marathon will commence at the Tawang Stadium, which will be beautifully decorated to host this historic international event. The proceedings will kick off at 5:30 A.M., with the flag-off led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Lt Gen Gambhir Singh, Commander of the Gajraj Corps, and other dignitaries.
In addition to the races, the event will feature cultural displays, an exhibition of army equipment, and designated selfie points. The inauguration of the Tawang Archery Node and a variety of refreshments will also be available for participants and spectators.
The day will culminate with a vibrant closing ceremony, showcasing local cultural performances, speeches from dignitaries, and the felicitation of the winners. The entire event is expected to wrap up by 1:30 P.M., marking a day of celebration and camaraderie for all involved.
As the final week of excitement approaches, the anticipation for the Tawang International Marathon continues to build, promising a remarkable experience for all participants and attendees.
