Upholding its long-standing tradition of promoting adventure, teamwork, and leadership, the Indian Army's Tiger Division has launched a 12-member cycling expedition from Chandigarh to Manali, Himachal Pradesh. The expedition, which aims to cover 1,192 kilometers in 28 days, will traverse the treacherous Shipki La pass, standing at an elevation of 13,420 feet. The event was flagged off by Major General Mukesh Bhanwala, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 26 Infantry Division, on 25 September 2024.
The initiative is designed to highlight the Indian Army’s unyielding spirit in tackling extreme weather conditions and challenging terrain in high-altitude areas. The expedition will pass through 42 villages, including 10 identified as "Vibrant First Villages," as designated by both the central and Himachal Pradesh governments.
In addition to showcasing the Army’s strength, the team will engage with ex-servicemen, Veer Naris (widows of fallen soldiers), and gallantry-awarded personnel along the route. They will also inspire the local youth to join the Indian Armed Forces through various entry schemes, including the Agnipath scheme, which facilitates enrollment as soldiers and officers.
Furthermore, the expedition team will promote women’s empowerment by raising awareness about military entry schemes for female students, such as opportunities at military schools, the National Defence Academy (NDA), and the Officers Training Academy (OTA).
The expedition will also foster closer ties between the Armed Forces and the local civil administration, with planned interactions between military personnel, local representatives, and village authorities to reinforce national integration efforts.(pr)
