The Nagaland government has decided to hold a special session of the Assembly to discuss and pass a resolution to abolish AFSPA. The special session is tentatively scheduled for December 20, and States’ Governor Jagdish Mukhi will formally convene it.
Following the killing of 14 civilians by security forces in Oting, Mon district, the Nagaland Government on Thursday decided to hold a special session of the Assembly and pass a resolution to repeal the AFSPA (The Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 which gives the army the power to arrest and detain in 'disturbed areas'), a Government spokesperson said.
This decision was taken in the meeting of the core committee on Naga political issue of the state government held here earlier in the day.
Six coal workers were killed in an ambush by security forces in Oting village of Mon district on Saturday. This later led to clashes, in which seven civilians lost their lives.
On Sunday afternoon, a mob vandalized and torched parts of an Assam Rifles camp in Mon town, killing another civilian, police said.
After these incidents, the demands for removal of AFSPA from Nagaland has intensified to vast extend. Tribal organizations and civil society, including Naga students' union and women's groups, are asking the state government to hold a special session of the assembly and pass a resolution to repeal the Act.
On Monday, the Chief Minister of Nagaland Shri Neiphiu Rio had called for the "draconian act" to be scrapped.
