From December 1 to 3, 2024, Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, the Director General of Border Roads, visited the areas of Guwahati, Tawang, and West Kameng in Arunachal Pradesh to inspect road construction projects being carried out by Project Vartak.
In Guwahati, Lt Gen Srinivasan was given an update by Mr. Harendra Kumar, the Additional Director General of Border Roads (East), on the progress of various border road projects in the North Eastern region.
During his visit to Tawang, he conducted an aerial survey to review the progress of important border roads in areas like Nelya, Dhaula, and Hatonga in the Zimithang sector, as well as the forward areas of Lungro, Damteng, and Yangtse. These roads are crucial for securing the remote border areas.
The General also met with Arunachal Pradesh's Chief Minister, Shri Pema Khandu, to discuss future infrastructure development projects in the region. He also interacted with key officials from Tawang, including the MLA and Deputy Commissioner, to explore ways to improve local road networks.
A major part of the visit was dedicated to the inspection of the Sela Tunnel, which is located at 13,000 feet and ensures all-weather connectivity between Guwahati and Tawang. Lt Gen Srinivasan was briefed on the tunnel’s advanced monitoring system, known as SCADA, which provides real-time data on operations. He also reviewed the safety features and technical aspects of the tunnel to make sure they meet international standards.
Satisfied with the tunnel’s operations, the Director General praised the efforts of Project Vartak, noting that the team had ensured continuous movement of vehicles and supplies to Tawang and surrounding border areas, even in harsh weather conditions.
This visit highlighted the importance of infrastructure development in border areas, not only for national security but also for improving the lives of people living in these remote regions. (PR)
