The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has confirmed the retrieval of the mortal remains of Commandant Rakesh Kumar Rana, the pilot of the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) MK-III, who went missing following an emergency landing last month. The remains were found approximately 55 kilometers southwest of the Porbandar coast on October 10, 2024, after an extensive search and rescue operation lasting over a month.
Commandant Rana was on a medical evacuation mission on September 2, 2024, tasked with rescuing a seriously injured crew member from the Motor Tanker Hari Leela. During the mission, the helicopter made an emergency landing, prompting the ICG and Indian Navy to launch a comprehensive search and rescue operation to locate the missing personnel.
While one crew member was successfully rescued shortly after the incident, the search continued for Commandant Rana and two other crew members. On September 3, the remains of three personnel were recovered, but the search for Commandant Rana persisted for several weeks, involving over 70 air sorties and the deployment of multiple naval ships.
In a statement, the ICG expressed its deep condolences and paid tribute to Commandant Rana's bravery and dedication to duty. The mortal remains of the fallen pilot will be cremated with full military honors, following service traditions, as a mark of respect for his sacrifice.(PR)
