In a significant military appointment, Air Vice Marshal Vikas Sharma has taken command as the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) of the Headquarters for Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh on 9 October 2024.
A seasoned officer of the Indian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Sharma was commissioned into the fighter stream of the IAF's flying branch on 16 June 1990. Over a distinguished career spanning 33 years, he has served in numerous key operational and administrative positions. His extensive career includes commanding a fighter squadron and an operational frontline fighter base in the eastern sector. He also led the prestigious Networked Tactical Node, a critical element of the IAF’s network-centric operations.
In addition to his operational roles, Air Vice Marshal Sharma has held diplomatic responsibilities, serving as India’s Defence Attaché to Thailand. His administrative acumen was further demonstrated in his previous assignment as the Senior Officer in charge of Administration at the Southern Air Command.
Air Vice Marshal Sharma’s academic credentials are equally impressive. He is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, the College of Air Warfare in Secunderabad, and is an alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi.
Recognized for his distinguished service, he was awarded the prestigious Vayu Sena Medal in 2011.
This new command appointment marks another notable chapter in Air Vice Marshal Sharma’s exemplary career, as he takes on the responsibility of leading the crucial Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh sector for the Indian Air Force.(pr)
