The Indian Army’s Eastern Command, through its Trishakti Sappers, has created an innovative technique called the Advanced Flood Monitoring System (AFMS), which won a national award at Inno Yodha, a competition that highlights new solutions for defense and disaster management.
The AFMS was inspired by the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) that affected the Teesta River in Sikkim in October 2023. The system, led by Havildar Suresh PK of the Engineer Regiment, tracks water levels in real time and sends early SMS alerts to help with quick disaster response.
The system uses advanced technology, including a microcontroller, UV sensor, and GSM module. It works on the SONAR principle to accurately detect water levels and send warnings on time, helping protect both the Army personnel and local communities from future floods.
This award-winning technology shows the Indian Army’s dedication to using modern technology to improve safety, preparedness, and disaster response for the people of Sikkim and beyond. (PR)
